Never has it been more important for us to teach our children how to achieve a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Below are some helpful tips on healthy eating.

 

The 5 that count!

 

Fruit and vegetables contain loads of vitamins and minerals to make sure you stay fit and healthy – try and eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables EVERY day.

 

WHAT COUNTS

- Raw, Canned, Dried, Frozen and cooked veg.

- Fruit

- Beans and pulses

- Fruit Juice

 

The Most important meal of the day!

 

Wake yourself up with a healthy breakfast and give yourself a great start to the day! After all, you haven’t eaten since dinner the night before and that could be 14-16 hours ago.

 

Breakfast tips:

 

- Always make time to have breakfast

- A portion of fruit will help couont to your 5 a day

- Wholegrain, oat and whole wheat cereals gives you a healthy start to the day

- A glas  of 100% (150ml) fruit juice with breakfast counts towards your 5 a day portions

 

Watery facts!

 

The best drinks for thirsty kids are water and milk.

It’s essential for young people to remain hydrated, especially when being physically active.

The human body is about 66% water, it helps to control body temperature, transport nutrients and digest food.

A glass of 100% (150ml) fruit juice is also really refreshing and counts towards your 5 a day portions

 

Drinks tips

 

- Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water each day

- Limit the amount of fizzy drinks you have

 - Milk is a great source of calcium and helps to maintain healthy teeth and bones

- Keep some drink to hand so you can reach it whenever you need it while you're exercising

 

Fuel for sport

 

Kids need to eat carbohydrates to give their bodies extra fuel, and we need to eat lots of foods rich in starchy carbohydrates when we take part in physical activities.

 

Where can i find them?

 

Foods rich in Carbohydrates are: Rice, Pasta, Cereals and potatoes

 

They can also be found in

 

Fruit and veg, Pulses, yoghurt and beans

 

Snacks and Treats

 

Everyone, young and old, loves a snack or treat now and again.

Snacks form part of a balanced diet, which can be enjoyed in between breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Everyone likes a treat, but too many can be bad for our health and our teeth

 

Snack Tips:

 

- Choose a variety of snacks to enjoy

- A portion of fruit makes an excellent snack (counts towards your 5 a day)

- Always brush your teeth after eating sweets.

 

Fishy Facts

 

Try and enjoy at least two portions of fish every week.

Fish is high in protein, vitamins and minerals and low in saturated fats, which is great for a healthy body.

Oily fish like mackerel, salmon and sardines contain Omega 3 fatty acids which may help children concentration.
